I believe that strong local schools are an essential building block of thriving neighborhoods and the key to keeping Chicago and Illinois competitive.  As your State Representative, I will work with families, neighborhood organizations, business groups, teachers, administrators, unions and CPS officials to develop collaborative relationships that will make sure our children have access to the great schools they deserve.

As your Representative in Springfield, I won’t sit quietly by while we pass unbalanced budgets that keep kicking the can down the road and sending our credit rating further and further into the basement.

I believe every woman has the right to make her own decisions about her health care – and that includes reproductive health. As your representative in Springfield, I will oppose any effort to limit Illinois women’s access to contraception and safe, legal abortion.

Other states have found that smart, well-administered marijuana legalization programs can protect public safety while simultaneously creating an important new source of tax revenues.  In fact, one analysis estimates that making recreational marijuana legal in Illinois could bring in up to $700 million in state sales and excise taxes each year

Every time I look at Lake Michigan, or visit one of our fabulous state parks, I am reminded once again how lucky we are to live in this beautiful state. As your Representative in Springfield, I will work with our environmental community in the fight to protect our open lands and natural resources, and to keep our air and water clean.

Here in Illinois, we are spending more than $1.4 billion a year on the state Department of Corrections. Imagine how much more value we would all receive from that investment of tax dollars if we stopped sending people to prison for low-level crimes and minor drug offenses.

It’s time to take a smarter, more humane, more fiscally responsible approach to Illinois’ criminal justice system.

By refusing to pass a budget for two years, Rauner deprived more than a million people in Illinois of services they need and deserve – mental health services, substance abuse treatment, child care, senior care, HIV prevention, and even food programs.

But as your State Representative, I will work hard every day to help our social service agencies get back on their feet and repair the gaping holes that Rauner has torn in Illinois’ safety net.

When the State of Illinois provides home care and transportation to our seniors, that’s more than just basic human decency, it’s also basic economics.

When we fund programs that make it possible for our seniors to stay in their own homes instead of going into nursing homes, the State saves hundreds of millions of dollars. Those in-home caregiver programs also create local jobs and generate vital economic activity. That’s a win-win-win for all of us.

It is wrong to scapegoat hard-working public employees to justify cutting their pension benefits. By claiming that public pension benefits are over-generous and undeserved, some of our elected officials are trying to pit our public employees against the people they serve.

We cannot get out of this mess by misleading taxpayers and insulting the professionalism of hard-working teachers, state workers, and other public employees. Instead, we need to come together, negotiate, and develop solutions that will make sure our public employees’ retirement systems are fair, sustainable, and properly funded.

It seems odd to have to state a position on the issue of hate and intolerance.  But, somehow, racism, sexism, misogyny, xenophobia, homophobia and religious intolerance have become the political currency of Donald Trump's presidency and the GOP’s policies.  As your representative, I pledge to use my voice to fight back against Trump’s divisive, anti-American, and intolerant rhetoric. My office, and my approach to public policy, will be inclusive, welcoming, and sensitive to the needs of all minorities – whether you are a religious minority, an undocumented immigrant, a member of the LGBTQ community, a person with a disability, or you belong to any other minority group, you will be treated with the respect and dignity that should be afforded to all humans, simply for being human.  Hate will have no home in my office.  We will welcome AND celebrate diversity in all of its forms. We will honor the many vibrant cultures that make up the beautiful tapestry of the 4th District.  And, we will vocally oppose and reject intolerance in all its forms.
