Raising the Minimum Wage
We must raise the minimum wage.
Alyx is running to fight for working families in the 4th District and across Illinois. Every day, we open the paper to find that corporations and the wealthy keep getting richer, while working and middle class Americans get the shaft. Alyx will work to put an end to this imbalance that leaves our communities behind.
Did you know that in Illinois 41 % of workers earn less than $ 15 an hour? With only $ 8.25 per hour, the current minimum wage in Illinois leaves a mother with two children living in poverty, even if she works full-time.
An increase of $ 15 would make a big difference for working people who fight to keep themselves and their families.
Women and people of color can make the most of the possible increase. More Than 6 out of 10 employees with minimum wage in Illinois are women, and almost half (46 %) of all women working in Illinois earn less than $ 15 per hour (compared to the 36 % of the working men.) Increasing the minimum wage not only helps women and their families to survive, but also addresses some of the economic inequalities resulting from racial and gender discrimination, and can help to reduce the gender wage gap.
