Looking Out for Seniors
When the State of Illinois provides home care and transportation to our seniors, that’s more than just basic human decency, it’s also basic economics.
When we fund programs that make it possible for our seniors to stay in their own homes instead of going into nursing homes, the State saves hundreds of millions of dollars. Those in-home caregiver programs also create local jobs and generate vital economic activity. That’s a win-win-win for all of us.
But instead of supporting these important programs, Governor Rauner refused to fund them for two full years – pulling the rug out from under thousands and thousands of Illinois seniors and the caregivers who work for them.
I have heard from too many seniors who have been denied the fundamental services that make it possible for them to live independently – rides to the grocery store, help with the housework, and meals on wheels. That’s despicable.
This issue is personal to me. My mother and I served as my grandmother’s caregivers for years – we understand how hard life can be for someone in declining health because I’ve seen it in my own family. As your State Representative, I will stand up for our seniors and speak out against Bruce Rauner’s attacks on the fundamental services that our older citizens have earned – and that save money and provide economic benefits for all of us in Illinois.
